Guitar

My hobby is guitar.  A few years ago I decided to do something besides teaching.  I had always wanted to play the guitar and was lucky to find a great teacher, Colin McAllister, now at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs (http://colinmcallister.com/).  I took lessons from Colin for upwards of ten years.

My repertoire is mostly classical.  The most challenging pieces I’ve ever performed (not that I performed all that well) are:

  • A couple of pieces from Bach’s Third Suite for Cello (a performance nightmare–but then, it’s Bach)
  • Verano Porteño, a tango by Astor Piazzolla
  • Capricho Arabe, by Franciso Tarrega

My normal repertoire consists of easier pieces.  I’m trying to branch off into jazz and Samba, but in some ways classical is easier–it’s very scripted.  You just play the notes.

For the last two years I’ve participated in the Encinitas Guitar Orchestra. We’re a group of around 40 guitarists who meet on Monday nights and perform three times each year under the direction of Peter Pupping (http://peterpuppingband.com). Here are a couple of recent videos (you can find more here: https://www.youtube.com/@peterpupping1258/videos)

Here are some older videos of me:

And some recent photos–I’m playing at a local coffee place (http://kaffeemeister.com/):
